years building her career and had recently been laid off from a VP-level role.

When I asked her how she was introducing herself during networking conversations, she paused.

Then she said:

“I keep introducing myself by what I used to be. Like I’m reading from an old business card.”

I understood exactly what she meant.

Because a layoff doesn’t just remove your paycheck.

It removes the context that made your professional identity feel obvious.

Your title disappears.

Your company email stops working.

Your team moves on.

And suddenly, something that felt permanent for years is no longer yours.

That’s when a strange question can start creeping in:

“Who am I without that job?”

I’ve heard versions of that question many times.

And I think there’s an important distinction we often miss.

Your title is not your career. It’s simply the label your last company gave you.

Think about what actually made you valuable in that role. It probably wasn’t the words on your LinkedIn profile.

It was the decisions you made.

The problems you solved.

The people you influenced.

The mistakes you learned from.

The relationships you built.

The judgment you developed after doing the work for years.

Those things don’t disappear when your employment ends. In fact, they’re often the most valuable things you take with you.

But there’s a problem.

Most people don’t know how to describe them without their old title doing the work for them.

“VP of Operations” tells someone what level you had reached. It doesn’t necessarily tell them what you are exceptionally good at.

“Senior Product Manager” tells someone what your function was. It doesn’t tell them which problems you know how to solve better than most people.

“Director of Marketing” tells someone where you once sat on the org chart. It doesn’t tell them what changed because you were there.

That’s the gap I see in many post-layoff job searches.

People lose the title, then immediately try to replace it with another title. They start searching for:

VP of Operations.

Director of Strategy.

Head of Customer Success.

But the better question isn’t “What title should I have next?”

It’s “What value do I want my next role to recognize?”

That question changes the search.

Because now you’re not starting with the job title. You’re starting with the evidence.

By evidence, I want you to think:

The project you turned around.

The team you built.

The revenue you influenced.

The process you improved.

The crisis you handled.

The decisions you made when there wasn’t an obvious answer.

That’s your career. The title was just the label attached to it.

And this matters because the first few weeks after a layoff can make you forget that distinction.

You start looking at job descriptions and asking whether you’re qualified. You compare yourself to people with better titles. You wonder whether employers will see you differently now.

You start treating the layoff as if it changed your professional value. But it didn’t. But it may have changed how clearly you can see it. That’s something worth fixing.

Not by immediately rewriting your resume. Not by applying to another 50 jobs. And not by trying to sound more impressive.

Start small.

This weekend, take 10 minutes and answer these 3 questions:

What are 3 problems I became unusually good at solving?

What are 3 results that happened because I was involved?

What are 3 things people consistently came to me for?

Don’t use your job description and don’t copy your resume. Make sure not to worry about making the answers sound impressive. Just tell the truth.

Then read your answers and ask yourself:

“If I removed my last job title, would I still recognize the professional described here?”

I hope the answer is yes.

Because if it isn’t, that’s where the work begins.

The real work would then lie in not rebuilding a title but rebuilding your understanding of the value underneath it.

Your Turn

This week’s prompt is designed to help you separate your professional identity from your last job title.

Copy and paste it into your favorite AI assistant (Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT)

“I was recently laid off, and I’m struggling to describe who I am professionally without relying on my previous job title.

Don’t rewrite my resume.

Instead, ask me questions about the problems I’ve solved, the results I’ve created, the decisions I’ve made, the people I’ve influenced, and the situations where others relied on my judgment.

Then identify the 3-5 strongest patterns in my experience.

Help me turn those patterns into a clear description of the professional value I bring, without using my previous job title as the main descriptor.

Finally, give me 3 possible directions for the kind of problems, roles, or environments where this value could be useful next.”

This Week’s Conversation

Earlier this week, I shared the story of a senior professional who had applied to 300 roles and received just 5 interview calls.

Her resume had been reviewed by recruiters who told her it was excellent.

But there was a problem.

One of her previous roles was genuinely Director-level in scope, but her official title made that seniority almost invisible to recruiters.

<a They were responding to what came before it.

“The hardest part isn’t losing the job.”

That sentence seemed to resonate because many people know exactly what comes next.

The uncertainty.

The awkward conversations.

The silence after sending applications.

The quiet question that begins to creep into your mind: What if this says something about me?

I’ve heard that question in different forms over the years.

“Maybe I’m not as valuable as I thought.”

“Maybe my skills aren’t relevant anymore.”

“Maybe this happened because I wasn’t good enough.”

But interestingly enough, none of those thoughts appear in a termination letter. We write them ourselves.

That’s why I’ve come to believe that a layoff creates 2 challenges.

The first is practical: You have to figure out finances, update your resume, reconnect with your network, and start looking for opportunities.

The second is psychological: You have to stop this one business decision from becoming your identity.

The second challenge is often harder. Understandably so.

Companies don’t lay people off because everyone suddenly became bad at their jobs. They lay people off because markets change, budgets shrink, strategies shift, acquisitions happen, or leadership decides to move in a different direction. Sometimes entire departments disappear overnight. Sometimes the highest-paid people are let go simply because reducing payroll solves a financial problem.

Those decisions can change your employment status, but they don’t erase your work experience.

Yet it’s remarkable how quickly many accomplished professionals begin rewriting the story of their own careers.

20 years of solving problems suddenly feels less important than one difficult afternoon.

Years of leading teams become overshadowed by one meeting with HR.

An impressive career gets reduced to a single line: Laid off.

That’s the part that bothers me.

Not because layoffs aren’t painful. They are. I have gone through it myself.

But because they often become the lens through which people start viewing everything else they’ve accomplished.

When that happens, it shows up in subtle ways.

People begin apologizing for things they never controlled.

They spend interviews explaining why they left instead of showing why they should be hired.

They rewrite their resumes over and over again, hoping a different summary or a stronger bullet point will somehow restore the confidence they’ve lost.

In reality, confidence rarely returns because of a better resume.

Your confidence returns when you remember that your career is much bigger than the company that happened to employ you last.

A resume is simply a snapshot, but your career is the story.

Don’t confuse the two.

This weekend, I’d like you to try something before you update another bullet point or submit another application.

Open a blank document and answer this question:

“If the layoff had never happened, how would I describe my career?”

Write whatever comes to mind.

Don’t mention the layoff.

Don’t mention the job search.

Write about the problems you’ve solved, the people you’ve helped, the decisions you’ve made, and the moments that made you proud.

When you finish reading it, ask yourself one more question.

“Is this the person I’m showing employers today?”

If the answer is no, don’t start by changing your resume.

Start by changing the story you’ve been telling yourself.

Because employers don’t hire your layoff.

They hire your experience, your judgment, and your ability to solve problems.

Those things didn’t disappear the day your role did.

Your Turn

This week’s prompt is designed to help you separate what happened to you from what is true about you.

Copy and paste it into your favorite AI assistant.

“I was recently laid off, and I think it’s affecting how I see myself professionally.

Don’t rewrite my resume.

Instead, help me rebuild my professional confidence.

Ask me questions about the work I’m most proud of, the biggest problems I’ve solved, the people I’ve influenced, and the achievements that mattered most throughout my career.

Then identify any limiting beliefs I’m carrying because of the layoff.

Challenge those beliefs using evidence from my own experiences.

Finally, help me write a short professional narrative that reflects my strengths, values, and direction without letting the layoff define my career.”

This Week’s Conversation

Earlier this week, I offered a few free resume teardowns for professionals who have been applying for more than 60 days without getting interviews.

Reading through the responses reminded me that many talented people aren’t struggling because they lack experience. So they prepare for a negotiation, rehearse their talking points, and ask for more money.

Sometimes it works. Usually, it doesn’t change much. And even when it does, the number still feels wrong six months later.

The issue isn’t that you’re bad at negotiating.

The issue is that you’re negotiating from a weak position.

Compensation isn’t set by how hard you work or how good you are at your job. It’s set by how the market perceives your value. And market perception is driven almost entirely by positioning.

Positioning is how you’re categorized. It’s the box people put you in when they see your LinkedIn, read your resume, or hear you describe what you do.

If your positioning is vague, you get compared to a large pool of generalists. If your positioning is specific, you get compared to a smaller pool of specialists. The smaller the pool, the higher the leverage.

This is why two people with identical skills and experience can have wildly different earning potential. One is positioned as “a marketing manager.” The other is positioned as “the person who scales B2B SaaS companies from $10M to $50M ARR.”

Same skill set. Completely different market value.

The frustrating part is that most professionals never choose their positioning. They inherit it. Their job title becomes their identity. Their company’s description of their role becomes their description of themselves.

Then they wonder why the market undervalues them.

When your positioning is unclear, three things happen.

First, you attract the wrong opportunities. Recruiters reach out for roles that don’t fit. Hiring managers see you as interchangeable with dozens of other candidates. You end up competing on price instead of value.

Second, you lose negotiating power before the conversation starts. If the other side can’t clearly see what makes you different, they have no reason to pay a premium. You’re forced to justify your worth instead of having it be obvious.

Third, you undervalue yourself. When you can’t articulate your specific value, you start to doubt it. You accept offers that are “good enough.” You stop expecting more because you’re not sure you deserve it.

None of this is a character flaw. It’s a positioning failure.

The question isn’t “How do I get paid more for what I do?”

The question is “How do I make what I do unmistakably valuable to a specific market?”

Salary negotiations are downstream of positioning. If you fix the positioning, the compensation conversation gets easier. If you don’t, you’re just putting pressure on a system that was never designed to reward you.

Before your next compensation conversation, run your positioning through these three questions.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" paragraph to explain your value, you’re under-positioned. Specificity is memorable. Generality is forgettable.

Two: Who is the exact buyer for your skill set?

Not “companies” or “hiring managers.” Which specific type of company, at which stage, with which problem? If you can’t name it, you’re selling to everyone, which means you’re compelling to no one.

Three: What do you solve that most people in your field don’t?

This is your differentiation. It’s not about being the best. It’s about being the obvious choice for a particular problem. If you can’t answer this, you’re competing on credentials instead of outcomes.

If you can answer all three clearly, you have positioning. If you can’t, that’s the work.

When your positioning is clear, the job search inverts.

Instead of applying and hoping, you get approached by people who already understand your value. Instead of negotiating from a defensive stance, you negotiate from a position of scarcity. Instead of wondering if you’re being paid fairly, you have a clear benchmark for what your positioning commands.

This doesn’t mean you’ll never face rejection or lowball offers. But it means you’ll stop questioning whether you’re worth more. You’ll know exactly what you’re worth, and to whom.

If your compensation feels stuck, don’t start with negotiation tactics. Start with positioning.

Figure out what you do, who you do it for, and why you’re the obvious choice. Get specific enough that a stranger could repeat it back to you.

The money follows clarity. I track what my clients say, how companies respond, and what actually results in more money.

The results surprised me.

Here’s what works, backed by numbers.

What Doesn’t Work: Emotional Arguments

“I’ve been here for three years” → 12% success rate

“I work really hard” → 8% success rate

“I need the money” → 3% success rate

Companies don’t care about tenure, effort, or your financial needs. They care about business value and market rates.

When someone says, “I’ve been here for three years,” the company hears, “I’m loyal but not necessarily more valuable than when I started.”

When someone says, “I work really hard,” the company hears, “I’m doing what I’m paid to do.”

When someone says, “I need the money,” the company hears, “That’s not our problem.”

These arguments fail because they frame the negotiation as the company doing you a favor instead of making a smart business decision.

What Works: Business Cases Backed by Data

“Market rate for my role is $X” → 67% success rate

“I’ve delivered these specific results” → 71% success rate

“Based on these three data points” → 78% success rate

The highest success rate comes from combining all three: market data, specific results, and a clear ask.

Here’s what that sounds like in practice:

“Based on my research using salary data from multiple sources and conversations with others in this field, the market rate for a Senior Product Manager in Austin with five years of experience is between $140,000 and $165,000. Over the past year, I’ve launched two products that generated $2.3M in revenue and reduced churn by 18%. Given these results and the market data, I’m requesting an adjustment to $155,000.”

Notice what’s happening here:

Market data from multiple sources (not just a feeling)

Specific, quantifiable results (not “I work hard”)

Clear ask with reasoning (not “whatever you think is fair”)

This approach works because it removes emotion and makes it a business decision.

The manager can take this case to their boss or HR and say, “Here’s why this makes sense” instead of “They asked for more money because they’ve been here a while.”

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" calculate the cost of replacing you.

When someone says, “If you left and we had to replace you, what would that process cost?” managers start doing math.

Recruiting fees: 15–25% of salary ($20K-$35K for a $120K role)

Training time: 3–6 months of reduced productivity

Institutional knowledge loss: Impossible to quantify but real

Team disruption: Projects delayed, others pick up slack

Suddenly, your $15,000 raise request looks like the cheaper option.

I’ve seen this work in 73% of cases where it was used.

Not because it’s a threat, but because it reframes the conversation from “Can we afford to pay you more?” to “Can we afford not to?”

Timing Matters More Than Most People Think

Success rates by timing:

Job offer (before accepting): 81% success rate

Annual review: 52% success rate

Random Tuesday: 31% success rate

After getting another offer: 89% success rate

The highest success rate comes from negotiating a job offer when you also have another offer in hand. You have maximum leverage, and the company has already decided they want you.

The worst time to negotiate is randomly, outside of any review cycle or business event. There’s no natural reason for the conversation, and budgets aren’t allocated.

If you’re already employed, the best approach is to negotiate during your review cycle or when you’ve just delivered a major result.

The Words That Kill Negotiations

“I was wondering if maybe there’s any chance…” → 14% success rate

“I feel like I deserve…” → 19% success rate

“Would you be willing to consider…” → 22% success rate

Tentative language signals uncertainty. If you’re not confident in your ask, why should they be?

Compare to:

“I’m requesting…” → 64% success rate

“Based on X, I’m targeting…” → 71% success rate

“The data shows…” → 78% success rate

Confident, direct language backed by data works because it’s professional, not aggressive. You’re stating facts, not begging for a favor.

What Happens When They Say No

Most people accept the first “no” as final. That’s a mistake.

When companies say “we don’t have budget,” here’s what I’ve seen work:

Ask about signing bonus → 41% success in getting something

Ask about stock options → 38% success

Ask about extra PTO → 52% success (easiest to approve)

Ask about title bump → 44% success (helps future negotiations)

Ask about 6-month review → 67% success (kicks the can, but gets commitment)

In 500+ negotiations, only 23% resulted in “no” to everything. The other 77% got something, even if it wasn’t the original ask.

The key is knowing there are multiple forms of compensation beyond base salary.

How to Actually Do This

Here’s your action plan:

Step 1: Research your market rate: Use Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, Payscale, My Salary Check, industry reports. Talk to people in your field. Get 3–5 data points, not just one number.

Step 2: Document your results: Write down specific accomplishments with numbers. Revenue generated, costs saved, projects shipped, problems solved. Quantify everything you can.

Step 3: Write your script: “Based on [market data sources], the range for [role] with [experience] in [location] is $X-Y. I’ve delivered [specific results]. I’m requesting $Z.”

Step 4: Practice: Say it out loud. To yourself, to a friend, in front of a mirror. Until it feels natural and confident.

Step 5: Have the conversation: Schedule time with your manager. Present your case. Ask for what you want. Don’t apologize.

Step 6: Handle objections: If they say “no budget,” ask about alternatives. If they say “not now,” ask when and what you need to demonstrate. Get commitments.

The professionals who do this get paid 15–30% more over their careers than those who don’t.

That’s not a small difference. That’s the difference between $2 million and $2.6 million in lifetime earnings.

All because they learned how to have one conversation effectively.

Need help with your specific situation? The problem? My coaching costs $500+, which prices out most people who need it.

So I spent months building an AI tool that does everything I used to do manually:

✓ Analyzes your exact market rate

✓ Shows if you’re underpaid (and by how much)

✓ Generates a personalized negotiation script

✓ Email templates for follow-up

✓ Strategies for handling objections

$29 one-time payment. 5 minutes.

Why this matters to YOU:

The compound effect of salary is massive. If you’re $15K underpaid right now:

Year 1: -$15K

Year 5: -$75K (with typical 3% raises)

Year 10: -$150K+

Over career: -$300K-500K

When you factor in:

- 401k matching (% of salary)

- Future raises (built on current base)

- Social Security (lifetime earnings)

All because you didn’t negotiate once. That’s career roulette.

Let’s fix that.

Step 1: Know Your Function

Skip the dream job fantasy.
Start with your core function. The type of work that energizes you.

Your options:

Creating: writing, designing, coding, building

Analyzing: solving, researching, finding patterns

Organizing: planning, coordinating, managing systems

Your action:
Write this sentence.
“I enjoy __________.”

This becomes your filter. clear step forward

Your action:
List your top 2–3 job titles that match your core function.
These become your focus lane.

Step 3: Gather the Right Kind of Proof

You don’t need a personal brand.
You need evidence.

Where to find it:

Academic projects: group work, research, presentations

Extracurriculars: clubs, event planning, volunteering

Personal projects: blogs, side hustles, creative work

Your action:
Select your top 2–3 proof points.
These become the anchors of your story.

Recap: The 3-Part Clarity System

<a
